Hypnotherapy has helped many people by using hypnosis. Hypnosis is not a ‘sleep-state’ despite the word’s derivation from the Greek hypnos meaning sleep. It is a naturally occurring state of mind – one of deep concentration and awareness – which is brought about by suggestion. By inducing a trance state the hypnotherapist is able to bypass the critical conscious mind and talk directly to the subconscious mind. This is where our belief systems are based and where we store our learned behaviours. Therefore by making positive suggestions to the subconscious mind while a person is in trance the hypnotherapist is able to change negative, limiting beliefs into more positive, liberating beliefs which benefit the individual. It’s important to know that a person in trance has full control over what is happening, they have the ability to stop the session whenever they want and will normally be fully aware of everything that is happening and everything that the hypnotherapist is saying to them. Every individual is different and so is every hypnosis session. Some people achieve a very relaxed state quickly and others take much longer to go into trance but this should not affect the success rate of the session.
Hypnotherapists accredited by
the Hypnotherapy Society (the UK’s largest accrediting body) will
only ever use hypnosis for therapeutic gains. Members will have
agreed to abide by their code of conduct and ethics.
The Hypnotherapy Society is the fastest growing professional organisation for practising hypnotherapists in the UK. Furthermore, although the Society offers full facilities for the accreditation of Training Schools and Courses, the Society remains completely independent from such training - an essential prerequisite for any professional body.
